February 16th at 10 a.m. & 2 p.m. – God’s Gonna Trouble the Water (app. 60 min.)

Ruby Dee is the narrator of this documentary that tells the compelling story of the Gullah people of coastal South Carolina and Georgia, and how they forged a culture distinctly their own. In the Praise Houses of the Sea Islands, the Gullah fused Christian words learned in the galleries of white churches with the rhythms of Africa, giving birth to spirituals – a blending of languages, folkways, lore, music and beliefs of three continents to fit their needs in the sea islands giving birth to the Gullah Culture.

March 1st at 10 a.m. & 2 p.m. – When Rice Was King (app. 60 min.)

This documentary tells the fascinating story of the rise and fall of rice-growing in South Carolina. When Rice Was King also recognizes the contributions of slaves; their knowledge and labor were major factors in the success of rice-growing in South Carolina.

March 8th at 10 a.m. & 2 p.m. – Porgy: A Gullah Version (app. 2 hrs)

The Gullah translation and stage production of Porgy, performed in Charleston, SC. A crippled beggar named Porgy lived at Cabbage Row in Charleston, SC. His unusual live provided the basis for the Dubose Heyward’s book, Porgy, later turned into the famous opera Porgy & Bess.

March 15th at 10 a.m. & 2 p.m.  Daughters of the Dust (app. 2 hrs)

A film of spellbinding beauty and brilliant resonant performances tells the story of a large African-American family as they prepare to move North at the dawn of the 20th century. Using the simple tale, the film brings to life the changing values, conflicts and struggles that confront every family as they leave their homeland for the promise of a new and better future.

Have you always admired beautiful Sweet Grass Baskets? Well, this is your chance to create one! You'll need to register by Friday, February 17, 2012, if you'd like to try your hand at creating a basket. Teen and Adult crafters will benefit from interaction with Mt. Pleasant basket weaver,  Ms. Vera Manigault. Ms. Manigault will demonstrate the techniques, share her knowledge of the history of the baskets, and aid the class in basketry.  Class size is limited.
